Let’s knead hope in 2024

Dear Lucy J’s Bakery Community,

The holidays are upon us, the sixth holiday season that we have been here at Crosstown Concourse. Soon 2024 will be here with all the promise of a new year. Somehow, so many things have changed and yet so many things are still the same. We still open each morning excited to welcome our neighbors for their morning coffee and pastry. The change is that more and more of the morning rush is seeing Crosstown High School students as they buy their morning cinnamon roll. It’s a favorite!

Our mission has not changed, and the need has only increased over the years. There are many families that are experiencing homelessness. The Dorothy Day House is full, and many parents need employment. Lucy J’s Bakery wants to be that resource that provides wages starting at $15 an hour, job training, and the understanding that families need on a daily basis.

One of our newest employees, Polly says, “Lucy J’s has helped many past and present residents of the DDH, and we’re planning for futures ones as well. It’s a great setting to work in because it is very helpful and understanding to working parents. Take myself for example, I’m a mom with 6 boys, and I love my job. Sometimes, one of my kids gets sick, and I’m unable to get to work. My coworkers take up my slack, and I do the same for them, if need be. My boss is caring and understanding, and I still have a job once my family is better. Most women with kids have great work ethic yet can’t hold a job due to hardship. Working here is like having an understanding family that tries to support you anyway possible. Working here, I’m learning how to do things I admire. It’s an honest environment, and my boss wishes that he could always do more for us.”

Looking ahead to the coming year, our goals include:

Secure a larger production space
Increase the number of employees
Improve employee benefits and compensation.
